#205 Rug Braiding                                               Letty Klein

This day-long workshop is for the fiber artist with a closet full of fiber, the shepherd wishing to make something from their wool sheep, and the hand-crafter looking to add warmth and a decorative flair to their home. Students will learn how to braid roving, felt the braids, and sew the braids into a beautiful, functional heirloom rug to be enjoyed now and to pass on to another generation. In this class students will complete a simple chair pad using minimal equipment from their own roving or they can purchase rug roving from the instructor. The techniques learned can then be used to create their own beautiful rugs at home.

Participants should bring: Students can bring their own roving (about a pound in various colors) or the instructor will have an assortment of roving available for purchase as well as copies of the new book “The Shepherd’s Rug”.

Just about any sheeps wool will work, also mohair/wool blends, alpaca and llama in roving form.

 

# 206 Intermediate Rigid Heddle Weaving     Joan Hoover

Rigid Heddle weaving doesn’t have to be plain. We’ll play with color and texture and hand manipulating the threads to create some very cool samples. Start with a warping refresher. We’ll work our way through techniques that include leno, inlay, pick up, hemstitching and other finishing techniques. We’ll leave you with ideas for your next exciting rigid heddle project. Must have had beginning rigid heddle class or some prior rigid heddle weaving experience. NOTE: a student could take beginning RH weaving one day and intermediate (this class) the next.

Creative Synchronicity with silks and dyes.  Use a variety of resists, containers, and dye methods to create beautiful, one of a kind dyed silk scarves or other fabrics.  Participants will learn to, embed objects or otherwise manipulate fabrics and drip, pour, sprinkle, paint, dip or splash dye.  Class emphasis is on creativity and surprise, letting your imagination unfold like the fabric you dye!  Silk, cotton, rayon, hemp, and wool fabrics will be available.

Knitting – Tips, Tricks & Tools you may not have considered.   Gadgets from the hardware, grocery, drug and sewing stores to enhance your knitting experience, plus lots of innovative ideas to make knitting easier, more fun, convenient, faster and less expensive.   40 years of knitting experience and problem solving have resulted in a store of knowledge. Nancy uses this to bring you all kinds of simple solutions to common problems. The class will cover: A better buttonhole, and button spacing; lengthening or shortening a finished project; better fitting armholes, neckbands and shoulders; how to exchange yarns successfully; making I –Cords and twisted cords; measuring for a better fit; estimating yardage for a project; useful knitting tools from other sources, and lots more!

At the beginning of the class, during the introductions, I ask each person if they have a specific question or problem that needs solving. I add those into the class where they best fit, or cover towards the end of the class.

Crochet hook in the approximate same size as was used for yarn in homework, Cloth tape measure at least 60” long,

Homework: Using a worsted weight yarn (handspun is OK) and appropriate needles for the yarn, knit 2, 4 inch square swatches in stockinette stitch. One of them you can bind off, but leave the second one still on the needle. Make sure you have about an ounce of yarn left over to use in class.

# 221 Mechanics of your Wheel                           Amy Tyler

Spinning wheels are marvelous machines! In this workshop, we will cover the way(s) spinning wheels work. There will be spinning exercises to help participants make sense of drive mechanisms, drive ratios, take-up tension, and wheel maintenance. Along the way, participants will be introduced to concepts of mechanics (such as force, torque, angular momentum, friction) in a non-mathematical way.

# 222  Modular Lace for Beginners     Susan Kawamoto

This class is for students who would like to learn how to knit lace. The project that the students will work on is a 4-sided pyramid that is knitted one triangle at a time. The first triangle is worked then the next triangle is made by picking up stitches on one side of the previous triangle and then worked.

Many times knitters get discouraged knitting lace because of multiple repeats that cause confusion. This project has a 31 stitch cast on and 31 rows are worked so there is very little room for confusion. The finished project is made into a potpourri that has an I-cord hanger.

# 223 Crocheted Flowers for Embellishmemt  Janet KingsThanks to Nicky Epstein we now embellish purses, pillows, clothing and anything else that strikes our fancy. In this class we will tackle various types of flower forms. These are basic forms that you will be able to expand on and experiment with both in class and on your own. At least one flower you will need to take home and felt. We’ll also try some leaf shapes. Examples of finished items will be on display.

Participants should bring:  At least 1 oz. each of 6 or more “flower” colors of smooth worsted weight yarn. Variegated colors create  wonderful effects. At least one of these yarns must be 100% wool. The others can be any fiber content.  Also bring at least one “leaf” color yarn. Tools  needed are a size “H” crochet hook (feel free to bring  along other sizes),  scissors and a tapestry needle.

Design a pin to match a favorite outfit, with handspun or commercial yarn.  Learn to design wearable art with some pins, board and fiber.  We will put some beads on for extra sparkle and combine colors for setting off the beads.   The weaving is simple and can be relaxing after a long day and you want to play.  The techniques for how to design a one of a kind piece will be covered in this workshop so you can create many more works of art at home.  Come to this class and tap into your creative mind and experience the fun of weaving.

Come and see why everyone is so interested in soap making!  Gone are the days of rendering fat and boiling caustic soap for hours.   We’ll discover how to get organized and make soap with less mess.   You will work with natural colorants and essential oils to create a pound of beautiful, fragrant soap that you’ll be delighted to use or proud to give.

Participants should bring:  Pyrex measuring cup, 1 or 2 cup, stainless steel whisk, rubber spatula, stainless steel mixing bowl (at least 4 cup) rubber or latex gloves,  and safety goggles.  OPTIONAL:  Hand held blender, not necessary but very helpful, soap molds: please use plastic, raw soap must not come in contach with aluminum or iron.  Yogurt and margarine containers work well, you will need 5 4oz. containers.  Roll of paper towels and box or tray to carry your soaps home.

 

# 227 Advanced Wet Felted Flowers          Suzanne Pufpaff
In this hands-on workshop, students will be introduced to ways to make wonderfully colorful, stemmed flowers using wool blend roving. In the past, Suzanne has taught basic flowers. In this workshop we will build on the skills learned in basic flower making and continue on to more advanced techniques which include roses, stemmed flowers, dimensional flowers like daffodils and building leaves around armatures to create longer leaves. The entire process is done on a small tray and is completely portable. Each student will make at least 2 flowers during class. Multiple flower designs will be discussed and demonstrated while students are creating their blooms. Blooms will be suitable for vase display or hair raps to suggest a few uses.

#228 Needle Felted Hats                Andrea Mielke Schroer

Needle felting is becoming more popular every day, and neat innovations are being discovered.  This dry felting technique  lends itself to more than just sculptures, flat work and embellishments, it can make shaped clothing, such as hats.  Students will start a needle felted hat, with full instructions of finishing if not done by the end of class.  This light weight wooly hat offers many designs possiblities. Don’t miss this class!

Marl yarns are often defined as plied yarns in which the plies are different colors. We will cover techniques for making those yarns, as well as making marl yarns in which the plies are from different fiber sources. In the process, we will cover strategies for controlling thickness and twist of singles and for plying to create balanced yarns.

You’ve learned the basics, now let’s move on to milk based soaps.  In this workshop, we’ll work with different ways to incorporate milk into your soap recipes, as well as use a wider variety of fragrance oils, colorants and super fatting agents.  We will also experiment with different techniques for creating artistic soaps, as well as discuss how to create your own unique soap.  Create a pound of beautiful, fragrant milk soap that’s great for your skin.

Learn how those talented knitters and spinners from Orenburg perform feats of textile magic by turning the raw down from native goats into luxuriously soft, exquisitely fine yarn via supported spindle that ultimately results in the most elegant lace shawls and scarves in the textile universe.  In this class, Galina will introduce you both to the handspinning of, as well as, the more economical use of today’s ‘luxury’ fibers, such as cashmere, qiviute, pygora and more.  Authentic hand turned Russian supported spindles will be available for class use.

# 234 Laminated Silk Scarf                       Suzanne Pufpaff

This is a felting technique which incorporates woven fabric with an open weave structure, like silk gauze, with gentle  pressure and moisture to natural animal fibers, like alpaca.  The fibers are attached to the gauze background in an unlimited array of designs.  During the workshop, students will dye a length of silk gauze and then custom design and create a beautiful, light weight silk shawl, using a variety of natural and dyed alpaca roving.  The shawl can be either a rectangle or triangle.

The wool from different breeds of sheep can vary substantially in softness, elasticity, luster, and feltability. Through hands-on examination, we will cover these widely varying characteristics of wool. In addition to sheep breed, other factors will be addressed that influence the characteristics of the final fiber project, such as fiber preparation and spinning techniques. We will examine samples of fiber, yarns, and knitted swatches of various wools; and we will spin samples from different breeds and fiber preparations.

# 303 Spinning Awesome Angora Bunny

This class will focus on the particular challenges presented by spinning and blending angora bunny fibers.  Angora bunnies are cute and fuzzy, fiber producers. The fiber from their fur seems to be in a category of its own, not exactly wool, a down or a hair. The fiber has an amazing ability to soften a yarn and add a soft fuzzy halo to the finished product. There are special techniques to consider when choosing and spinning this readily available fiber. Spend a day preparing, carding, blending and spinning angora.

Class schedule: Types of angora breeds, Carding and blending with wool, Carding and making punis, 2 ply angora from punis, Spinning from commercial angora roving, Wool and bunny mixed ply yarn,  and Dyed angora blend roving.

Felt Shoes: Art on the Run

 Create a custom pair of shoes with leather soles and felted uppers. Shape leather for a sole and heel, then design and wet felt the uppers to shoes, boots, or slippers that fit you exactly!

Participants should bring: An old towel for soaking up soapy water, a large cellulose sponge, a matchstick blind at least 24"x30" (Blinds available from the instructor for additional $10 by pre-order.), heavy duty razor knife and 2 extra blades, a regular household claw hammer. Optional: dishwashing gloves if you do not like having your hands in soapy water; any fibers or yarns of your own that you might want to incorporate in your project.

Introduction to the basic elements and pattern designs of Orenburg lace.  Mouseprint, cat’s paw, honeycomb these are but three of the ten basic elements that form the basis of Orenburg’s knitted lace, combinations of which result in the near mystical pattern designs that evolve into Orenburg lace shawls and scarves.  In this class, Galina will introduce students to the basic elements, border and corner preparation, grafting methods, all in preparation to render each student capable of knitting their own heirloom shawl.

# 306 Rug Hooking                                        Linda Harwood

This class will open a whole new world to you about working with wool,  It will offer everything you need to know to begin hooking rugs.  You will learn the art of rug hooking including information about backings, frames and cutters, hooks and how to finish your hooked piece. This type of hooking is pulling strips of wool material through a backing to create a design that could be a heirloom.  You will work with a small kit consisting of a pattern on burlap with enough hand dyed cut wool strips to complete the piece.
